John Rylands Library, on Deansgate, was founded by Enriqueta Rylands in memory of her husband John. It was designed by architect Basil Champneys in 1889, who had impressed Mrs Rylands with his work on Mansfield College Oxford, and took 10 years to build, at a cost of around £500,000.
