History: Torquay pottery was first made in the late 1860s, a short distance from the resort town of Torquay in Devon, a county in southwestern England. According to legend, a local landowner, G.J. Allen, discovered a sticky, dark red clay on his property when his groundskeeper put in new stone steps.

Who is Babbacombe pottery?
Babbacombe Pottery was founded in 1952 by Edwin Barrett making traditional Torquay motto ware and a variety of contemporary decorative designs by traditional methods. During this time special pottery was produced by their top decorator Deirdre Wood with geometric, fish or other designs, much of it signed by Deirdre.
When did Torquay pottery close?
Later under three more owners using different business names the pottery adapted using slip moulded items to meet the changing demands of the public. When did the Royal Watcombe pottery close?
The Royal Watcombe Pottery closed in 1962. Other beds of suitable clay were found around the area and many other potteries were established. The Torquay Terra-Cotta Company was at Hele Cross in 1875 also producing terracotta ware, possibly to a higher standard. The firm went out of business in around 1905.
What ever happened to Barton pottery?
The Barton Pottery produced art ware in bright blue, seagulls or moonlight scenes were a specialty. Babbacombe Pottery was founded in 1952 and produced motto ware and contemporary designs. The pottery closed in 2002 and the buildings are now used for mobility and care services.
