When should I call my triage pregnancy?
Triage is the assessment area for maternity where we assess many needs, not just labour. You may be referred to triage by your GP, community midwife or you may contact us directly after 20 weeks of pregnancy, up to 6 weeks after delivery of your baby.
How many beds does Birmingham women’s hospital have?
There are 210 beds on the site, which comprises 117 for maternity inpatient services, 53 for neonatal intensive care, this includes transitional care ward, intensive care unit, high dependency unit, special care baby unit and 42 for gynaecology services.
What is antenatal triage?
The Triage area consists of two private assessment rooms where the midwife will take your history and undertake an Antenatal assessment (like the assessments the Midwives carry out in the community). Maternity Triage can be a very busy area, and women will be seen on a priority of care basis.
Can partners attend scans Birmingham?
Unfortuatnely we cannot offer partner attendance at any our our gynaecology outpatients appointments.
Can I ring triage for advice?
In the first instance this can often be your GP or community midwife. If you are concerned that something may be seriously wrong or you cannot get in touch with the GP or community midwife the Maternity Triage Unit can be contacted for advice and support.
Can you ring your midwife anytime?
When can I call my midwife? You should be able to call a midwife 24 hours a day. Your midwife will give you the contact details. It may not be a midwife you know, but there will always be someone on call.
When was Birmingham Women’s Hospital built?
The Birmingham and Midland Hospital for Women was established with eight beds at Showell Green in Sparkhill in 1871. It moved to a converted farmhouse on the Stratford Road in 1878, to a purpose-built facility on Showell Green Lane in 1905 and then to the current modern facility in Edgbaston in 1968.

How do you triage an OB patient?
The health care provider performing triage should assign the patient’s acuity during the first encounter. Triage is followed by the complete evaluation of the woman and the fetus by a health care provider with skills and training appropriate to evaluate the issues identified during triage.
What can I expect from triage?
In triage, a pregnant or laboring mom will be evaluated. Then, there will be the decision to either admit the patient to a different unit (usually the labor and delivery unit), be treated in triage for a short period, or be sent home.
Can you have 2 birthing partners?
A second nominated birth partner can now also be with them at the same time in birth rooms on our consultant-led unit (CLU) and midwife-led unit (MLU) at Lister Hospital’s Diamond Jubilee Maternity Unit. The two nominated birth partners must: Not change (these birth partners cannot be swapped to someone else)
Can children attend pregnancy scan?
Most hospitals are happy for you to have one person with you when you go for an ultrasound scan. Young children might not be allowed to come in with you because they can distract the sonographer – it’s a good idea to check beforehand.
