What temperature can you store CDs?
For CD and DVD cold storage, the ISO standard for the storage of optical discs states that storage down to -10 degrees Celsius is acceptable. However, up until recently there has been no scientific research examining what effects below zero temperatures have on CD and DVD optical disc media.
How do you take care of a CD?
Do:
- Handle discs by the outer edge or the center hole.
- Use a non-solvent-based felt-tip permanent marker to mark the label side of the disc.
- Keep dirt or other foreign matter from the disc.
- Store discs upright (book style) in plastic cases specified for CDs and DVDs.
- Return discs to storage cases immediately after use.
Will CDs melt in heat?
DVDs and CDs Though digital streaming has become a predominant way we listen to music, there are still many who listen to music on CD. If stored in in a hot car, CDs can warp and jewel cases can melt together. There go your road trip tunes!
What is CD storage?
The compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format that was co-developed by Philips and Sony to store and play digital audio recordings. Standard CDs have a diameter of 120 millimetres (4.7 in) and are designed to hold up to 74 minutes of uncompressed stereo digital audio or about 650 MB of data.
Do CDs deteriorate?
Poor-quality discs (discs that do not meet standard specifications for proper manufacturing and function) will probably fail sooner than good-quality ones, due to rapid chemical degradation or physical damage. This was a significant problem when discs were introduced 2 and for at least two to three years afterwards.
Can CDs be stored in a garage?
Electronics, Old VHS Tapes, Old DVDs/CDs, etc. Electronics and anything having to do with them should not be stored in a place where heat and humidity are not controlled. Changes in temperature and moisture can cause electronics to stop working, data to be lost, and pieces to become warped beyond use.
What temp do CDs melt?
Polycarbonate, the plastic in CDs, is stable between ~ -40˚F to 280˚F. The acrylic layer on top has a similar stable temperature range. Since temperature inside of a car is within this range, there’s no real possibility of deforming the disc.
Why CDs should be handled with care?
However, if this layer is not properly applied (as was the case with some early CDs) or if discs are not handled correctly, the air and moisture can penetrate and cause the aluminium to oxidise and subsequently make them unplayable.
Do CDs lose quality over time?
Yes. Eventually they will degrade to zero. But they lose quality in a digital sense. Quality will be defined by the error rates.
