Is Reception the same as Year 1?
Reception is the name given to the first year at school. Some schools offer a staggered entry, others start all the children in the September.
What should a Reception child be able to read?
The framework for literacy states that Reception children should be able to write ‘simple regular words’. The kinds of words will vary from child to child, but most teachers will aim to have children writing CVC, CCVC and CVCC words by the end of Reception.
What should my child do in Year 1?
Your Year 1 child will count with objects and work in groups to explore shapes and pattern. Now that they are using numbers over 20, they will learn to use a 100 square to help with their adding and subtracting. They will learn to count forwards, backwards, in 2s, 5s, 10s, 20s, and they will double and halve.
Are Biff and Chip twins?
Biff and Chip are Kipper’s brother and sister. They are 7 year old twins. Biff’s real name is ‘Barbara’ and Chip’s real name is ‘Chip’. When Kipper was little he couldn’t say ‘Barbara and David’ and instead he called them ‘Biff and Chip’.
Is Reception compulsory in UK?
Reception is not compulsory in England and Wales. However, it is compulsory for children to begin their education the term after they turn five years old, which can fall into Reception class.
Why is Reception year so important?
It was a reminder of how quickly they grow and that Reception Year is such an important year of growth for a young child. It is a year where they gain so many new developmental skills. Children also need to mature and develop independence so that they are ready for big school in Year 1.
What phonics should be taught in Reception?
We teach children to spell the tricky words… the, to, no, go. Children also practise reading and spelling the high frequency words… will, that, this, then, them, with, see, for, now, down, look, too. We aim to have children secure in phase 3 phonics by the end of reception.

Is Reception year compulsory?
Reception class is the first year at primary school, but unlike every other school year, it is not compulsory for your child to attend, but it is a good way to introduce your child to life at school.
