(c) In 1998, California created its two-tiered teaching credential system and established the completion of a statewide, standards-based induction program, Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA), as a path toward a clear credential.
How long does it take to clear a credential in California?
After you’ve obtained a Preliminary Teacher Certification, you must complete requirements for a Clear Credential within 5 years. You can do this by completing an approved teacher induction program and submitting your application through the program sponsor.
What happens if you don’t clear your credential in 5 years in California?
If the prerequisite credential is not valid for a full five years at the time an individual applies for the dependent credential, the dependent credential will be issued with the same expiration date as the current prerequisite credential. Five-Year Preliminary or Level I teaching credentials cannot be renewed.
