What is Instow famous for?
Instow has a famous railway signal box, which is over 130 years old and was the UK’s first Grade II listed signal box. It used to control the signals at Instow Station and also the operation of the level crossing.

Instow is a village in north Devon, England. It is on the estuary where the rivers Taw and Torridge meet, between the villages of Westleigh and Yelland and on the opposite bank of Appledore. There is a small river beach and sand dunes, that home some rare species of orchid including the pyramid orchid.

Instow – Worth a visit. We visited Instow beach many times last week, while staying in Appledore. The beach is a lovely place to have a stroll along the waters edge. We visited with the family dog, who absolutely loved the sand and sea.

The sandy beach is backed by sand dunes and is maintained daily by a cleaning service. It is a popular dog-walk (remember to clean up – you WILL be fined, otherwise) and an extremely popular beach for young families to visit.
Is Croyde beach safe?
Croyde is perfectly safe to paddle in and if you keep between the lifeguarded flags you’ll have a great time. It is advisable that if you plan to swim, especially out of your depth, at Croyde you should exercise caution and swim between the flags which are patrolled by the lifeguard.
Where is the Tarka Trail?
The Tarka Trail passes right through into the heart of Instow, where visitors can walk or cycle south to Bideford, or North to Fremington or Barnstaple. Instow is bursting with history and character and features easily accessible facilities including a range of food outlets, toilets, beach shops, a slipway and car park.
Where is the best place to camp near Tarka?
Tarka Trail Camping is right on the South West Coast Path. There are Showers and Toilets on site with a Local Ale Brewery next door. We are an ideal spot to stop off.
How long is the walk from Torridge to Instow?
Walk – Torridge Tarka Trail 3.0 miles (4.8 km) Catch Bus to Instow – EX39 2BU Bideford Easy – Since the route uses a former railway, it is also suitable for use by cyclists, wheelchair users or as a pushchair walk.
What is there to do in Instow?
As you approach Instow there are opportunities to head to sandy dune beaches from the trail, and the Instow tunnel was a great hit with the children testing out their echoes! At Instow there is a road crossing (gated) and here we headed to the right to the parade of shops by Instow beach, and bought cakes and ice creams from John’s Deli.
