What is a valve stem on a tire?
A valve stem is a self-contained valve that opens to let air in the chamber of the tire. It opens once an air pump is pushed in and automatically closes immediately following the removal of the pump. It seals whatever air has gotten inside, preserving the pressure of the tire.
Can a valve stem on a tire be fixed?
If the valve stem is leaking, you can easily fix it yourself with a valve stem tool. You only need a valve core tool and a package of new valve cores (both inexpensive). Then remove the old core with a valve core tool, screw in a new core (just snug it up; it’s easy to strip the threads), and then refill the tire.
Do I need to replace valve stems with new tires?
You do not NEED to change the valve stems but you SHOULD ALWAYS change the valve stems when you change the tires on your car. Valve stems, like tires are made from rubber, and so, like tires have a definite life expectancy to them.
Can you drive with a broken valve stem?
Even though you will be fine to drive with a missing air valve cap, we recommend replacing it when you get the chance so that you can keep dust and debris out of your tires. Metal caps can corrode over time and fuse to the stem, and removing it will become extremely difficult when you need to refill your tires.
What causes a tire valve stem to go bad?
Valve stem damage – New tires typically come with new valve stems, because the old ones tend to wear out. If you have older valve stems, they may go bad over time, due to use, dislocation, and exposure to chemicals on the road, such as road salt. They may corrode and go bad.
What causes a valve stem to leak?
Wear and tear is the main cause of a leaking valve. It has a mechanism consisting of a spring-mounted valve that closes tightly with the air pressure inside the tire. Over time, the stem valve may become brittle and cracked, which may increase the risk of air leaking through it.
How often should tire valve stems be replaced?
Of course, it also helps to prevent air loss using the rubber seal inside the cap. The rubber components of a tire valve stem can dry out and crack over time, causing air leaks or total air loss. We recommend replacing your valve stem every time you replace your tires, at least.
Can valve stem be damaged?
Over time, the stem valve may become brittle and cracked, which may increase the risk of air leaking through it. Depending on the extent of the damage, the air will leak out slowly or more quickly. In both cases, the valve must be replaced.
