There are three principal versions of the SM465, each based on the era and configuration of the transmission. There is no known mechanical superiorities to either earlier or later versions. Not necessarily. Larger shaft diameters are stronger, and larger shaft diameters usually require a higher quantity of splines.

NV4500 stock bell housing will not be able to be used in 73-87 trucks since the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder is on the passenger side. It will interfere with the drive shaft. SM465 bell housing will not bolt up. You will need to use an Advance Adapters Bell Housing.
