How is wind energy created and stored?
Wind turbines can use excess power to compress air, this is usually stored in large above-ground tanks or in underground caverns. It can also be injected in an internal combustion turbine, where it is burnt with fuel to provide mechanical energy which then powers a generator.

Wind is air in motion. Wind forms when the sun heats one part of the atmosphere differently than another part. This causes expansion of warmer air, making less pressure where it is warm than where it is cooler. Air always moves from high pressure to lower pressure, and this movement of air is wind.

Pressure gradient force is the primary force influencing the formation of wind from local to global scales. This force is determined by the spatial pattern of atmospheric pressure at any given moment in time. Figure 7n-5 illustrates two different pressure gradient scenarios and their relative effect on wind speed.
