How does the NASCAR Chase work?
Under this system, any Chase driver who won a race during a playoff round is automatically guaranteed a spot in the next round. Up to three drivers thus could advance to the next round of the Chase through race wins, regardless of their actual points position after the final (third) race in that round.
What happens if more than 16 drivers win a race?
If there are 16 or more winners in the first 26 races, the ties will first be broken by number of wins, followed by points. Prior to the start of the playoffs, all playoff drivers will have their points adjusted to 2,000, with all playoff points added to their total.
How does the NASCAR Cup Series work?
The NASCAR Cup Series playoffs consist of four rounds: the Round of 16, the Round of 12, the Round of 8 and the Championship 4. Playoff drivers advance to the next round by winning a race or finishing a round with enough points to be above the cutoff line.

If NASCAR never went to the Chase format, things would be a little bit different right now. Instead of having five championships, Jimmie Johnson would only have two. Carl Edwards would currently be a two-time champion, and Jeff Gordon would be heading into 2013 looking for his seventh championship.
How are NASCAR owner points awarded?
Points are earned based on a driver’s finishing position at the end of the race. Points can also be earned by finishing in the top 10 at the end of a race stage. How many points do you get for winning a stage in NASCAR?
Drivers who finish in the top 10 in Stage 1 and Stage 2 earn additional race points, with the winner of each stage earning 10 points, second place earning nine points, third place earning eight points, etc., down to one point for 10th place.
