How do I report employment on OPT?

What happens if I don’t report employment on OPT?
If you exceed 90 days of unemployment, or if you fail to report your employment, the U.S. government will terminate your F-1 SEVIS record 90 days after your OPT start date. A terminated SEVIS record cancels OPT authorization and requires you to leave the U.S.
Is OPT an employment authorization document?
Optional Practical Training (OPT) is work authorization given to F-1 visa holders to be able to work in their field of study either during their schooling or afterwards. Usually OPT is good for 12 months.
Does OPT count as employment?
Post-completion OPT can be paid or unpaid training related to your major field of study. You must be engaged in at least 20 hours of OPT activity per week to count as active employment; periods with activity of less than 20 hours per week will be counted toward unemployment accrual.
Can I switch employers on OPT?
Yes, you are allowed to change employers while the STEM application is pending. If you are still within the initial 12 months of OPT, you can work for the new employer until your 12 month OPT ends.
What happens after 90 days of unemployment on OPT?
If you accumulate 90 days or more of unemployment, you are in violation of your F-1 status. You are expected to leave the U.S., transfer to another school, or change your visa status before the 90th day. See After OPT options below.
Can you be unemployed on EAD?
If you have a work permit to lawfully work in the U.S. (an EAD), you could be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits if you have lost your job. You are totally or partially unemployed.
Can I work on OPT without EAD?
No! Once you complete your degree, you cannot work on campus or off campus until you have the EAD in your possession and your selected start date has arrived. Working before OPT has been authorized by USCIS constitutes illegal employment that will jeopardize your legal status in the United States.
Can OPT students work on W2?
Yes you can do that as long as it’s related to your degree and is reported back to your school. Just make sure what you’re doing is actually work.
Can you be self employed on OPT?
Students on OPT may start a business and be self-employed. The student must be able to prove that he or she has the proper business licenses and is actively engaged in a business related to the student’s degree program.
