The Gloucester and Sharpness Canal (also known as the Gloucester and Berkeley Canal) is a canal in the west of England, between Gloucester and Sharpness; for much of its length it runs close to the tidal River Severn, but cuts off a significant loop in the river, at a once-dangerous bend near Arlingham.

After several years of inactivity, work started again on a route to Sharpness, which was seen to be a better place for an entrance from the River Severn, and the canal was eventually completed in 1827.

Why visit the Gloucester to Sharpness Canal embankment?
This site of historic importance on the embankment of the Gloucester to Sharpness canal and River Severn is a fascinating place to visit and easily accessible from the adjacent canal. Redundant and unwanted boats were beached here between 1909 & 1965 and allowed to fill with silt to help prevent erosion of the canal embankment by the river.
What happened to the dock at Sharpness?
With the increasing size of ships, particularly steamers, the entrance at Sharpness was seen to be inadequate. A new entrance and dock was opened in 1874. New warehouses were erected, both at Sharpness and Gloucester. Further improvements were made at Sharpness in the 1890s.
How many barges are there at Sharpness?
As well as the wooden barges, 6 concrete barges are on the bank nearby, and 18 steel barges and lighters may be seen protecting the sea wall between the Severn Railway Bridge and the Old Entrance at Sharpness.
What to do around Purton on the Severn?
A lovely quiet walk along the towpath sandwiched between the Severn and the canal at Purton by Berkeley. Very similar to the area at Slimbridge but with the addition of a number of ships beached on the shore in the 1950’s purposely to prevent erosion of the banks.
