Are Hanon exercises harmful?
The finger exercises train the pianist in speed, agility, strength and precision of all the fingers, as well as training wrist flexibility. In the same way that sports exercises can be harmful to your muscles if done wrong, Hanon exercises can also cause harm if not conducted in the right way.

How long should you practice Hanon?
For technical work, it’s possible that 15 minutes of focused, quality work will do more good than an hour of undisciplined work doing the exact same exercises. For your morning sessions when time is limited, I would probably limit Hanon to no more than a few minutes (5-10), and then move on to other things.

How long does it take to learn Hanon?
It took me 18 month to get through all 60 of them, none of them up to speed. The most difficult were thirds and octaves over arpeggios and arpeggios and some others. I can do parts I and II in about one and half hours but too exhausted to do all three part in one session.
Should I practice Czerny?
It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or an advanced student, or even if you are finally starting to gain command of scales and arpeggios—Czerny exercises are beneficial for everyone! When you compare other piano exercises, no other composer comes close in fusing technique and musicianship together as well as Czerny.
What age can you start Hanon?
Every thing is needed to pull the “Hanon 1-6” off. This is not for 6 year olds. I think the student needs to be around 10, but 12 is better as they approach at least 5′ tall. Size wise matters in all ways – physics at it’s best.
