How thick should loft insulation boards be?
As a rule, we recommend a base layer of 2.25 and a 3.85 top layer. If using a top layer of insulated loft floor boards – aim for a base layer as close as possible to an R-value of 2.25.
Can I use insulation board in loft?
You can use most types of insulation to insulate a loft, including insulation board, insulation roll and insulation slab. You can achieve this with insulation slab in the pitch and with insulation roll in the floor too. When you insulate a loft floor you’re also insulating the ceiling of the rooms below.
What size does insulation boards come in?
It comes in standard-size 4×8 sheets, and smaller sizes, in many different thicknesses from 1/4 inch to 2 inches. Some types of thicker foam board insulation are available, but they may need to be special ordered. Foam board insulation is easy to use and is a great DIY way to add some insulation.
Can you have too much loft insulation?
As long as you ventilate your property properly, you can have as much insulation as you like within reason. The trick with loft insulation is to balance the amount of insulation you have with the amount of ventilation necessary to prevent damp. As long as you get that balance right, you should be fine.
How do you insulate rafters in a loft?
An alternative way to insulate your loft is to fit the insulation between and over the rafters – these are the sloping timbers that make up the roof itself. You can use rigid insulation boards, carefully cut to size, or you can have foam insulation sprayed between the rafters.
Can chipboard be used as insulation?
Also, chipboard itself has a pretty good insulating value – (try placing your cheeks against one side while someone tackles the other with a blow torch. You should be safe for quite some time…) Also, the chipboard will reduce air flow over the insulation which, in itself, will help a bit.
Is insulation board better than wool?
When comparing these rigid boards to wool insulation, they tend to have much better heat retention properties; in fact you have to need to use twice as much wool to reach the same levels of energy efficiency as the rigid board.
Should I remove old loft insulation?
In most circumstances removing your old insulation isn’t necessary and it can actually be quite beneficial to leave it. This is as most insulation will retain its thermal properties so leaving it in place will mean that you continue to benefit from it whilst also having an additional layer of insulation on top!
Can you walk on foam board insulation?
The physical properties of MEPS foam board vary with the type of bead used. It’s manufactured at various densities, depending on the application. Beadboard for roofing materials has to be dense enough to walk on without damage; wall insulation foam boards are several times less dense than roof boards.
