Does the caged system work for all chords?
You can play a C-shaped C chord, but you can also play an A-shaped C chord, a G-shaped C chord, etc. After finding all the C chords in every CAGED shape, you’re ready to apply scales to these positions. Every chord also has a major scale, arpeggio, and a lot more fun stuff associated with it.
Is caged only for major chords?
The CAGED system doesn’t just apply to chord shapes on the guitar fretboard, but also major scale and arpeggio patterns. This makes sense given that chords are built from scales. The diagram below outlines the major arpeggio and scale pattern for each of the CAGED chord shapes.
Is it worth learning the caged system?
So is it worth learning? The CAGED system is worth learning because it brings the fretboard into order by providing a pattern. Also known as the 5-pattern system, CAGED is simply the chords C, A, G, E, and D. These five chords are chords every beginner learns right away and the idea behind the CAGED System is that these five basic chord shapes can be repeated all over the neck in order to make any chord in any key.
How do you remember 7th chords?
In order to get the 7th chord, after finding the corresponding major chord, add the flattened 7th note of the scale to the major chord and bingo… you get the 7th chord. In case of C scale the 7th note is B and flattened 7th is Bb. So if you add Bb to C major chord, you get C E G Bb which is the C7 chord.

CAGED is a useful tool to learn positions and how they interact all around the fretboard. It is not the only way to learn these things but it is a clear and intuitive way. CAGED works fine in any key including all sharp and flat keys so your F and B will not feel left out. I strongly recommend avoiding CAGED.
