Why can I feel my cervix with my finger?
The tip of the cervix can be seen from inside of the vagina during exams and can be reached and felt by a fingertip. During menstruation, the cervix opens a small amount to allow the shedding of the endometrium (mucous membrane lining the uterus) to pass through – menstrual flow.
Where is the cervix actually located?
The cervix is a cylinder-shaped neck of tissue that connects the vagina and uterus. Located at the lowermost portion of the uterus, the cervix is composed primarily of fibromuscular tissue.

Reach your finger inside of your vagina. Use the index or middle finger and slowly slide your finger in as far as you can reach, in sort of an upward motion. If you think of your vagina as a hallway, your cervix is the door at the end.

Feel for the cervix. The tip of your finger will touch the donut-shaped opening at the end of your vagina. You’ll know it’s your cervix if your finger isn’t able to keep reaching further. The cervix may be soft, like pursed lips, or firm, like the tip of your nose, depending on whether or not you are ovulating.

Tilted cervixes can be anteverted or retroverted, meaning it either points down to the spine or points back towards the belly button. If you don’t see it, allow the speculum to gently close and shift the angle of insertion before reopening it, or remove the speculum and reinsert it.
Why is my cervix tilted to the left?
What typically causes a tilted uterus? Some people are born with a tilted uterus. Sometimes, pregnancy stretches the ligaments that support the uterus, allowing it to shift positions in the body. Certain health conditions can also lead to the formation of scar tissue that pulls on the uterus, changing its orientation.
Can you feel a cervical tumor?
There are usually no signs or symptoms of early cervical cancer but it can be detected early with regular check-ups. Signs and symptoms of cervical cancer include vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain.
Is a cervix smooth or bumpy?
The cervix itself may be pink and smooth, or it might be uneven, rough or splotchy. All of these are normal. If you are pregnant, your cervix might have a bluish tint; if you have reached menopause or are breastfeeding, it may be pale.
