What is a C5 corpectomy?
Corpectomy = removal of damaged vertebrae and intervertebral disc (the “cushion” between the bones of the spine) A corpectomy is a procedure that removes damaged vertebrae and intervertebral discs that are compressing the spinal cord and spinal nerves.
How long does a corpectomy surgery take?
The total surgery time is approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the number of spinal levels involved.
What is C5 C6 surgery?
Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery involves removing the C5-C6 intervertebral disc to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or C6 nerve root. The disc is replaced by an implant or bone graft, allowing biological fusion of the adjacent C5 and C6 vertebrae.
What is C6 corpectomy?
Cervical corpectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove one or more vertebrae (bones) in the cervical spine (neck). A corpectomy involves removing the front part of the vertebra, the vertebral body. The portion of bone that surrounds and protects the spinal cord is preserved.
Is neck surgery Risky?
Some risks related to neck surgery can include: bleeding or hematoma at the surgical site. infection of the surgical site. injury to the nerves or spinal cord.
How do you perform a corpectomy?
A corpectomy involves removing the front part of the vertebra, the vertebral body. The portion of bone that surrounds and protects the spinal cord is preserved. Bone graft is inserted into the open space and stimulates new bone growth to occur that eventually joins the upper and lower vertebrae together.
Is a corpectomy safe?
It is a safe and easy procedure with little blood loss, but there are some disadvantages like potential cervical kyphosis, formation of hematoma, axial neck pain. Another posterior surgical option is laminoplasty.
Can C5-C6 cause paralysis?
An injury to the spinal cord at the C5-C6 level may cause pain, weakness, or paralysis in the arms and/or legs. There may be loss of bowel and bladder control or breathing problems in some cases. Nonsurgical treatments are often tried first for pain that stems from C5-C6.
How do I strengthen my C5-C6?
How to perform a side-to-side head rotation in a lying down position:
- Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
- Move your chin toward your right shoulder.
- Hold this position for 20 seconds.
- Move your chin toward your left shoulder.
- Hold for 20 seconds.
- Repeat 3 to 5 times on each side.
Should I Bill code 63081 or 22551 for A corpectomy?
If you put the code 63081 in the search area on this website you will find a lot of good information. Kim Pollock who also teaches the coding class for AANS has a lot of good answers on this site. I wouldn’t bill 22551 because it includes discectomy and that is already included in the corpectomy.
What is the CPT code for A corpectomy?
Since a corpectomy includes the discectomies above and below the corpectomy, you shouldn’t use 22551 (which is both the discectomy and the fusion). You should use 63081 and 22554 for the fusion only.
Does CPT 63081 include the diskectomy?
CPT® 63081 includes the diskectomy (63075, 63076) at the interspaces above and below the level of the corpectomy assuming a total corpectomy was performed. However, 63081 does not include the fusion (22554 and 22585 for the second level).
What is the CPT code for discectomy at C5 C6 interspace?
CPT codes 63081-63091 include a discectomy above and/or below the vertebral segment, so code 63075 (discectomy) would not be reported if performed at the C5-C6 interspace.
