Can you backdate JSA?
You can only backdate your claim if you have a good reason – for example a close relative died or you were given wrong advice by the Jobcentre. You’ll usually need to have looked for a job and been available for work from the day you want your JSA to start.

- Write a letter asking the benefit office to start your new claim from the older date.
- Include a photocopy or print-out of the proof you already claimed in with your letter.
- Keep a copy of the backdating letter and your proof for yourself.
What is a backdated payment?
What about backdated pay? Pay increases are often agreed after the date the new rate should have been paid from. If you retired in the last 12 months or so, and at the time you retired a pay increase was being agreed, you should get in touch with your previous employer to claim any backdated pay they might owe you.

How long can I stay on Jobseekers Allowance?

Contribution-based Jobseekers Allowance is paid for up to 6 months, but only if you paid enough Class 1 National Insurance contributions when you were working. You can get it even if your partner works or if you have savings. The calculator can not work out if you are entitled to contribution-based JSA.
