What is refractometer Brix scale?
Brix refractometers are a common instrument used to measure the sugar content of a solution. Brix refractometers are calibrated using the brix scale, where one degree brix (°Bx) is equal to 1% sucrose by mass. As well as sucrose, other types of dissolved solids can also affect the refractive index.
What does high Brix mean?
The Brix value tells you how much dissolved sugar is in a liquid solution. This value is indicated in degrees Brix. One degree of brix means that a hundred grams of liquid solution contains one gram of sugar. So: the higher the Brix value, the sweeter the liquid solution.
How do you calculate Brix?
Brix is a unit of measurement named after Adolph Brix. It is used commonly by food technologists to measure the amount of sugar dissolved in water. It can be calculated by dividing the dissolved solids by the sum of the dissolved solids plus the water, all multiplied by 100.
Do I need to calibrate my refractometer?
Refractometers should be calibrated at the beginning of each use and, depending on how many samples are being measured, periodically throughout the sampling process. Proper calibration requires a pure water source and testing solutions of known sucrose concentration.
How do I choose a refractometer?
Three key criteria to help you select a Brix Refractometer
- Automatic Temperature Compensation. Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) is a key feature you must have in a Brix Refractometer if you need quick and accurate results.
- Measurement Range.
- Accuracy.
