What happened Big Basin?
The fire that devastated Big Basin was the worst in the area’s recorded history. Sparked by multiple lightning strikes on Aug. 16, 2020, the blaze, the CZU Lightning Complex Fire, burned 86,509 acres, an area nearly three times the size of the city of San Francisco, in rural Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties.
Is Big Basin open again?
Parks will open for initial access during the yearlong planning phase, and a staggered reopening will kick off during the design and construction, which is slated for completion in 2030. It’s unclear when the park will be fully open, but initial access will not come sooner than 2022.
