Health and Wellbeing Boards bring together key leaders from the local health and care system to improve the health and wellbeing of their population and reduce health inequalities through: developing a shared understanding of the health and wellbeing needs of their communities.

Health and wellbeing boards (HWBs) continue to be an integral part of the current health and social care system in England. They bring together a wide range of representatives from local organisations, build on local partnerships, and support joint working across sectors and organisations locally.

They are constituted as a partnership forum rather than an executive decision-making body. In most cases, health and wellbeing boards are chaired by a senior local authority elected member.
