How is Modecate given?
This medication is given as an intramuscular (into the muscle) injection at your doctor’s office or clinic on a regular basis (usually every 2 to 3 weeks). The dose depends on the individual person being treated, and will be determined by your doctor. Seniors may require lower doses.
When do you give Modecate injection?
Long-acting, or ‘depot’, injections are used once your symptoms have been eased by taking tablets. The injection slowly releases fluphenazine into your body and is given every 2-5 weeks. The main advantage of a depot injection is that you do not have to remember to take tablets every day.
Why is Modecate being discontinued?
BMS have notified the end of production of Modecate Injection due to the unpredictability of supply of fluphenazine decanoate, the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), from the third party manufacturer, Fine Chemicals of South Africa. There are no other manufacturers of API worldwide.
How often should fluphenazine be taken?
Fluphenazine is usually taken once or twice daily with or without food. Typically patients begin at a low dose of medicine and the dose is increased slowly over several weeks. The dose usually ranges from 2.5 mg to 10 mg. The dose of the long-acting injection ranges from 12.5 mg to 37.5 mg every 2-3 weeks.

Initially 0.125ml ie. 12.5mg (0.0625ml ie 6.25mg for patients over 60) by deep intramuscular injection into the gluteal region. The onset of action generally appears between 24 and 72 hours after injection and the effects of the drug on psychotic symptoms become significant within 48 to 96 hours.
