How long do you have to be isolated after radioactive iodine?
You are also required to self isolate for 7 days after your radioiodine treatment in order to minimise the risk of contracting COVID-19 whilst there is still a large amount of radioactivity in your body. A small proportion of people with COVID-19 may become very unwell and require admission to hospital.
How do you clean a room after radioactive iodine treatment?
The iodine-131 will wash out in the laundry. Vacuuming will pick up hair that is shed, which will have small amounts of radioactivity in it since our heads also sweat. The conservative approach would be to cover the chair with a sheet.
Can you touch things after radioactive iodine?
Radioiodine will transfer to anything that you handle or that contacts your skin, such as bed linens or eating utensils. It is for this reason that you will use disposable eating utensils. It is also why we request that you avoid bringing personal items to the hospital room during treatment.

For 2 hours after you swallow the capsule: Do not eat any solid foods. An empty stomach helps your body absorb the radioactive iodine. Drink only water. For 3 days after you swallow the capsule: Follow your low-iodine diet.
Do I have to isolate after radiation therapy?
You should first understand that you don’t need to place yourself in an isolation room. You just need to make some modifications to your normal activities at home for a few days. During the initial phase of treatment, any bodily fluid will have some radioactive I131 associated with it.

Use soap and plenty of water. If you do not have access to a sink or faucet, use a moist wipe, clean wet cloth, or a damp paper towel to wipe the parts of your body that were uncovered.
What should I eat after Rai?
Starting from the morning after the RAI Treatment, take 1-2 sour candies after each meal, aiming for ~5 candies per day for 7 days. Lemon juice with tea is a good alternative if you do not like sour candies.
Can I drink water before radioactive iodine treatment?
You may have breakfast before you come to the hospital, if it is more than 2 hours before your I131 dose. Water is OK to drink. We encourage you to drink plenty of water to help flush the radiation from your body.
Does washing remove radiation?
You can shed 85-95 percent of the radiation on your body just through the removal of outer clothing and a decontamination shower. While my first instinct would be to take a scalding hot shower and scrub down every inch of my body like a surgeon washing up before entering the operating room, that’s not recommended.
Does radiation stick to clothes?
A lot of “radioactive waste” is things like kitchen towel and disposable gloves. The rules say you have to treat it as hazardous, even though it’s about as harmless as a load of granite chips. The “dirt” – radioactive particles – sticks to cloths and clothes the same way as ordinary dirt does – mechanically.
