What is the difference between MCB RCD and RCBO?
Whereas an RCD is designed solely to protect against earth leakage and an MCB protects only against over-current, an RCBO protects against both types of fault.
What is RCD MCB RCBO?
RCBO (Residual Current Circuit Breakers with Overcurrent Protection) devices are a combination of an RCD (Residual Current Device) and MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) in one. An RCD detects Earth Leakage, i.e. current flowing where it shouldn’t, switching the circuit off where there is an Earth fault current.
Do you need RCD with RCBO?
RCDs can protect against electric shocks, residual currents, and earth faults. On the other hand, RCBOs can do what RCDs can do and protect a circuit from short circuits and overload. RCBOs are essentially a combination of MCB and RCCB. As such, it can protect overload and short circuits.
Should I use MCB or RCBO?
MCBs can provide protection against overcurrent and short circuits only. RCBOs can provide protection against overcurrent, short circuit and earth leakage currents. RCBOs can protect against earth fault, electric shocks that MCBs may not do.
Can you put a RCD on a RCBO?
The RCBOs are fitted in the section not protected by any RCD.
What is RCBO used for?
RCBOs are commonly used in applications where there is the need to combine protection against overcurrents (overload and short-circuit) and protection against earth leakage currents.
Can you mix RCD and RCBO?
Yes, but only if there is not already an 30mA RCD covering the section of busbar you are mixing them on, ie dual RCD or split load board. On a main switch only board mix and match as you wish.
What is the advantage of RCBO?
RCBO is better since it can protect against earth leakage currents, short circuits, and overcurrent, while MCB only offers protection against short circuits and overcurrent. Also, RCBO can protect electric shocks and earth faults, but MCBs might not.
Can you replace RCD with RCBO?
You need check resistances and insulation test and that the RCBO isolation time operates within spec. If you want to omit RCD protection you have to use strong mechanical protection in the cable run for instance metal conduit with singles running in them from start to finish.
